Tribal Territories in United States

TRIBAL TERRITORIES

Modern  communities/physical lands recognized by or designated to groups of Indigenous People in the US & Canada (aka reservations).

Tribal territories throughout modern-day United States and Canada are physical lands with present day Indigenous communities. Whereas the entire continent was once inhabited and governed by Indigenous peoples, territories have been reduced and sometimes relocated through a multitude of factors including war, colonization, treaties, government policies, and general conflict.

Territories may be equivalent but not limited to the definitions created by the state, provincial, or federal governments of  the U.S. and Canada. Territories also include lands with historical and cultural ties that Indigenous groups recognize and occupy.

Tribal Territories listings of the US were compiled using data from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal directory, National Congress of American Indian (NCAI) tribal directory, and individual Tribal/Nation websites. Tribal Territories of Canada were compiled using the Government of Canada, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada list of First Nation Profiles.
